04.10.11 | GETZ opens Tour Series season with victory at Five Mile Point

Mother Nature tried fooling 26 cars on Sunday April 10th waiting to hit the dirt at Five Mile Speedway, located in Kirkwood, NY. only to have perfect racing weather.  The first two races had been cancelled due to weather along with numerous practices but with experience comes the checkered flag.

Butch Getz, Kresgeville native and former modified driver is excited about the 2011 season.

“The schedule for the touring series fits into my plans this year. I have two young girls that I can spend time with and still find the time to race. It can’t get better than that” stated Butch right before the modifieds hit the track for the first time in the 2011 season.

Getz started the night where he left off last season taking the first heat race win along with Chris Stockham and Aaron Bowes rounding off the top three. Doug Borger, series owner, decided to help the show along not to run a B-Main and all 26 cars would qualify. “I like to work along with the tracks” Doug explained, “and it helped the show move along. Andrew Harpell and his track crew did a great job with track prep which only helps us put on a great show for the spectators”.

The top four from each heat race redrew for their starting positions and the field was set. Nick Mady, driver of the 77x, and Cory Coons brought the 26 car field to the green and the show was about to begin. Nose to tail for the first three laps had the top three kept in single file until turns one and two when Mady drifted up opening the door for Getz to claim clean air and take control of the bottom. Mady knew Getz wouldn’t give up the bottom easily and quickly moved to the top hoping it would come in sooner that later. The #403 of Pasco Tomaino and Cory Coons closed in by lap #9 with Mady still working the outside running door to door with front runner Getz. Lap #12 would see the top three positions change with Cody taking over second at the line by a bumper. Cory knew by that time Getz had found the quick way around the track and hoped he could fine the quicker way in a hurry.

The battle would be hard fought as Getz held off Coons and Mady only to have a caution fly on lap #17 setting up a classic battle. Getz stayed right to the bottom with Mady going to the top and Coons staying on the bumper of Getz. After two circuits, Coons and Mady would come door to door out of turn four with them trying to get by Getz. Holding off one car is tough but Getz managed to hold off both on the white flag lap bringing home a season opening win. Cody Coons, driving the #82 hard into turn four earned him a well fought second with Mady rounding up the top three.

During tech, Butch talked about his winning run, “I know Nick and Cody are hard racers and when I saw Nick on my side I knew if I messed up he would be there.  Seeing Cody trying to get under me, I realized I would have to stay perfect. Holding off these drivers makes you work for every piece of track you can get. This was the first time I drove a modified with front brakes and I think Doug might be onto something. The car never felt like it wanted to turn around in the corners and gave it more stability. I wasn’t sure how it would pan out but it gave me once less thing to worry about”.

A total of 8 rookies makes one of the largest fields to date. Arielle Roldan, Madison DiMorier and Kailee DiMorier  will battle agaisnt  Alec Bartholomew, Brad French, Danny Lane, Steven Sherwood and Michael Burrows for Rookie of the Year.  The battle has been set and may the best guy or girl win.2010 champion, Tyler Bartik, started his season losing his chain in the heat but bounced back with a top five starting from the 24th position earning him hard charger of the night.

Joe Fanneli, driver of the popular Dons Automotive sponsored  #22, brought home a top ten finish and claimed the first RR tire give away. At the end of each tour race the winner of the feature will pull a pill and the driver that finished in that position will get the new tire at nights end. “ Bringing an 8th place finish and winning a new rr tire for “GEEZER” nation makes me want to grab the checkered flag and wave it cause I’m feeling like a winner tonite.” joked Fanelli has he accepted hi tire from Doug Borger.

The Xcel Chassis Touring division will invade  New York again on April 23rd bringing the mighty modifieds to Thunder Mountain Speedway, located in Lisle, where the action always heats up. Keep up on the happenings on the Xcel Chassis website  www.xcelchassis.com

04.01.11 | Xcel Chassis ups ante on 2011 600 Modifieds Series Tour

“The series has expanded so much for the 2011 season so to be able to add incentives for teams running the tour series this year is a sweet deal”, explained series owner and promoter Doug Borger, “Three tracks signed on over the winter. Lindas Speedway will run the 600 mods as a weekly division on Friday nights, Borgers Speedway will run the sportsman division on Saturday nights and Kutztown Fairgrounds has added the sportsman division to their weekly Wednesday night events.”

Over the fourth of July weekend, 5 to 6 teams plan on coming east from Wisconsin, where the 600 mods run weekly on Saturday nights, to hopefully take home some of the extra incentive. Mississippi Thunder Speedway, located in Fountain City, has played host to some teams from the east so now the tables will be turned.

“One of the biggest positives coming from the 2010 season was paying $20.00 for every heat race win so I decided to run the same program this year with the final check issued at the banquet. New for the 2011 season will be a team receiving a new RR tire at the end of each tour  race”, stated Doug,” after tech is completed and the finish deemed official, the nights feature winner will then pull a pill and  the driver that finished in that position gets the tire. The winner of the feature will also be eligible to win making him one lucky guy or girl for that night.  I gave it a lot of thought and this will give everybody a chance to take home something extra that night.”

The Xcel Chassis tour division is one of the few that pay money thru the entire field at nights end and with economics being a factor threw out the racing community it has to make you wonder” Does the future of racing need to get smaller to get bigger?”
