08.24.07 | Keppler Rockets at Big Diamond.

Steamy conditions awaited twenty-four 600 Modifieds at Big Diamond Raceway Friday night.  Chris Stockham and Ryan Higgs scored heat race victories on a very tacky racing surface.  The inversion placed top gun Mike Keppler and seasoned veteran Butch Getz on the front pole.  Keppler launched off turn four and beat Getz into turn one as Rick McGeady edged his way past Getz for second by the opening lap.  Heat winner Stockham passed four cars and was leaning on Brian Mady for fourth when contact sent both spinning on the third circuit.  Mady joined the rear as Stockham was done for the night.   Chuck Miller was also collected.  On the restart, Keppler continued to dominate rocketing out to a ten car length lead.  On lap eleven, Nathan Dibble and Jeromy Guistwite crashed in turn 3 bringing out the caution.  On the restart, Getz reclaimed second from McGeady.  McGeady then pulled off with mechanical problems on lap 14.  Keppler cruised to victory as Gardner got by Getz on the 18^th lap. George Loux edged by Getz on the last lap to claim third.   Ryan Higgs rounded out the top five.

Notes: Curt Amey was the hard charger of the night passing nine cars to finish 8^th.  Eric Witbe had a top ten finish in hand until mechanical woes sidelined him on the 18^th lap.  Scott Washburn was another victim of gremlins. While running 7^th he threw a chain coming off turn 4 on the final lap and wound up 12^th.  Despite rough conditions, the track surface was very fast all night with the top groove being the preferred line.  Butch Getz and Richie Everett gave everyone a preview for next year as the two have announced that Getz will race the entire 600 Modified Series in Everett's race car.
