05.24.08 | Mahoning sports first Asphalt show for 600 Modifieds... Ever!

A night of first lay ahead for 23 drivers this past Saturday night and the answers would soon follow. A majority of the cars took advantage of the early practices and were given ample time to dial in the cars.

Kevin Gruber, driver of the #33 and the 35K of Mike Keppler lead the first heat race across the line. The second heat race of the night went to Butch Getz’s #4jr sponsored by Pen Argyl Cycle followed by Eric “king roy” Whitbe. Dave Baldwin jr. started on the pole for the final heat race of the night and led for all 8 laps.

The top fifteen would then get inverted by the flip of the coin. Brian “ big daddy “ Mady’s #2 and the Flurers Autobody sponsored #16 ride of Ryan Higgs would set the pace to the green flag. Only 1 caution during the early running of the feature would set up a 10 lap battle between 7 cars. Jon Landis, driver of the #13, would contend for the lead with Higgs. Butch Getz, driving the Rich Everitt machine, had worked his way from the 14th starting position to 3rd by lap #10 setting up the battle for the top spot. Higgs would fine his line and his second victory of the season. Jon Landis would garner his best finish of the year crossing the line 2nd with Getz following a close third. Getz earned the hard charger of the night and also set fast time in the heats and feature with a time of 10.945. Del George jr. #5 and the Wasak sponsored #22 of Joe Fanelli’s machine would finish 4th and 5th rounding out your top five. This was the best finish of the year for Joe Fanelli and the first showing for Del George Jr.

A great battle between 7 drivers would put the transponders to good use. Brian Mady, Eric Whitbe, Ryan Suchon, Mike Pychinka, Kevin Gruber, Mike Keppler, Zane Zeiner, running the Hoosier tire sponsored #1 , and Dave Baldwin jr. swapped positions for the next 5 laps. You could have put a blanket over these cars as they finished within one tenth of a second in that order. Everyone would finish on the lead lap on the fast quarter mile track.
Rookie of the year contender, Bobby Scherff #56, had his best showing of the year and scored the second fastest time of the night running a 10.948. This is his first year in the racing circuit and looks to improve on his top rookie finish from Mahoning.

Doug Borger, series owner, stated “ This was our first asphalt race ever with the 600’s and turned into one of the best shows of the year. There was 3 and 4 wide racing thru out the entire field“. He wanted to thank Mahoning Speedway for having a great facility and the opportunity to run there.
The Hoosier Tire 600 modified series will be traveling to New Egypt Speedway, located in New Jersey, on June 1st and then head back to Pa. on June 6th for racing action at Big Diamond Speedway.
